Reducing one type of environmental release can affect other releases. These interactions can sometimes result in co-benefits where improvement in one parameter can cause improvement in others. For instance, when you reduce energy consumption by using less fossil fuel, you get co-benefits via reduced greenhouse gas emissions. In other cases, improvements in one area can cause deterioration elsewhere. Combustion units installed to reduce emissions of organic chemicals, for instance, will increase energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Using this resource, including the footprint decision tool incorporated into each decision area (e.g. water use), you can explore interactions, both co-benefits and trade-offs, between environmental parameters of common interest to the stakeholders of the pulp and paper industry.
The National Council for Air and Stream Improvement is an independent, non-profit research institute that focuses on environmental topics of interest to the forest products industry. Established in 1943, NCASI is recognized as the leading source of reliable data on environmental issues affecting this industry, and has nearly 100 member companies throughout the U.S. and Canada. More information on NCASI is available at http://www.ncasi.org.
Minimizing the environmental footprint from forest products manufacturing requires
understanding the interactions between various parameters. Manufacturing, recycling
and disposing of paper and wood products entails releases to the environment. When a
company minimizes one of these environmental releases, it may find that, at the same time,
other releases are minimized (co-benefits), or other releases are increased (trade-offs).
Environmental decisions therefore become something of a balancing
act, seeking to maximize co-benefits while minimizing trade-offs. The EFCT will
help you understand these sometimes complex interactions that become the scientific
backbone of decisions related to minimizing a company's or a facility's environmental
footprint.
The National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI) is an independent, non-profit research institute that focuses on environmental topics of interest to the forest products industry. NCASI was established in 9143 by the pulp and paper industry to provide technical assistance for the industry's goal of lowering the ecological impact of its spent pulping liquors. In the years since, NCASI has developed technical expertise spanning the spectrum of environmental challenges facing the forest products industry, and is today recognized as the leading source of reliable data on environmental issues affecting this industry. Through its research investigations, surveys, and other information gathering activities, NCASI helps ensure that environmental decision-making at many different levels is based on technical information of the highest quality. The Environmental Footprint Comparison Tool grew out of requests from stakeholders to better understand the complexities and interplay of environmental choices made during the course of manufacturing pulp and paper products. As consumers become more interested in the sustainability of the products they purchase, it is increasingly important for stakeholders to understand the science behind environmental decision-making. This tool represents technical knowledge acquired by NCASI scientists and engineers over the past 88 years of conducting research in the forest products industry, and is grounded in references to peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Close around Mr. Everdail, Jeff, Captain Parks and Miss Serena, with the youthful Sky Patrol in their midst, the rest of the sailors, and most of the house servants gathered. "They are travelling rapidly, of course. We shan't overtake them." They rode on, along the trail, at a walk and by file, and directly they came upon the other side of the question. Landor's horse stopped, with its forefeet planted, and a snort of fright. Landor had been bent far back, looking up at a shaft of rock that rose straight from the bottom and pierced the heavens hundreds of feet above, and he was very nearly unseated. But he caught himself and held up his hand as a signal to halt. But one after another found this tiresome after awhile and set himself to his usual camp employments and diversions. Some got out needles and thread, and began repairing their clothes. Some gathered in groups and smoked and talked. Many produced the eternal cards, folded up a blanket for a table, and resumed their endless sevenup and euchre or poker for buttons and grains of corn. Jim Humphreys found his way into one of these games, which was played behind a clump of bushes, and the buttons represented dimes. He was accumulating fractional currency. Gid Mackall embraced the opportunity to cook for himself a savory stew with some onions distributed by the Sanitary Commission. Sandy Baker went over his gun, saw that every screw was properly tight, and dropped the tiniest amount of oil on the trigger and the hammer, to ease their working. Pete Skidmore wandered down to the flank of the next regiment to find out if anything new had occurred. Harry Joslyn got himself into the exact "position of a soldier," with his heels together, his toes pointed at an angle of 45 degrees, and went through the manual of the piece endlessly. Si and the Orderly-Sergeant communed together about the rations for the company, and the various troubles there was always on the Orderly's mind about the company's management. Shorty got off by himself, produced from his breast his mementoes of Maria, and read over her last letter for the thousandth time, though he knew every word in it. But he seemed to get a new and deeper meaning every time he read it. Early in September George arrived. Reuben's face kindled when the doctor told him he had escaped Georgina. "But I ?un't—yesterday I wur fair crying and sobbing in front of all the children. In the kitchen, it wur—after supper—I put down my head on the table, and——" Then the conversation wandered from Reuben's successes to the price he had paid for them, which proved more interesting and more comforting to those assembled. "I've left this farm to William," continued Reuben, "because I've naun else to leave it to that I can see. All my children have forsook me; but maybe this boy 'ud be better than they." "She speaks my purpose," said Holgrave, as he grasped still firmer the poised weapon. A little after nightfall, the beautiful widow of the Black Prince sat in the oriel window of the hall, alternately looking with a mother's eyes upon her son, who was sporting with some of the young nobles, and then again turning to the window to listen for the approach of the citizens. She wore a small conical cap of gold tissue, terminated by a narrow band of purple velvet, closely studded with diamonds, beneath which her hair, soft and glossy as in her girlhood, was parted on the forehead, and fell back on her shoulders in rather a waving mass, than distinct curls. Her dress was composed of a petticoat and boddice of saffron-coloured damasked satin, with long hanging sleeves. The boddice sat close to the bust, and was confined up the front by twelve gold studs. A girdle of purple and gold, fastened by a buckle radiant with gems, encircled her waist; and the full long-trained petticoat, beneath which the sharp points of the poleyn, or gold-embroidered shoe, was just visible, was clasped in the front at equal distances by two rose-jewels. A mantle of purple velvet, confined on each shoulder by a diamond brooch, fell in rich folds at her back. It was about midnight that Wells, who had been thinking a great deal of the probability of gaining access to the fortress, went to the smith's quarters, and proposed to attempt an entrance. Tyler commended his devotion; and the galleyman, provided with a rope, to which an iron hook was affixed, and a flask or two of wine, dropped unobserved into the water. He swam on as softly as possible beneath the wall, and in the shadow cast by the moonlight. There was one part where he observed that an angle of the building cast a broad shade on the parapet; and here, without a moment's hesitation, he stopped, and throwing up the rope, the hook caught. Though encumbered by his wet apparel, he climbed up with the agility of a boy; but the instant his figure appeared above the wall, two men with drawn swords sprung forward.
